We’re approaching the August bank holiday, which pretty much marks the end of BBQ season here in Britain.
When I reflect back on this summer’s BBQ eats, I keep thinking about all the leftover vegetarian hot dogs we had after Mr. Veggie’s birthday barbecue. We stocked up, but didn’t actually use them, because our fantastic vegetarian guests all brought so many other vegetarian treats. So we had all these Quorn hot dogs to use up throughout the rest of the summer.
I’m not going to lie. Secretly, I was thrilled. Faux hot dogs are one of my guiltiest guilty pleasures.
And this is how the ultimate posh vegetarian hot dog was born.
(I call it that to feel better about eating it, you see.)
First, I tried all kinds of weird/creative hot dog recipes. (The hot dog carbonara was really a low point.)
And in the end, I came to understand that the hot dog is best served the way it was intended. In a bun, with toppings to your taste.
Despite my clear enthusiasm for this guilty pleasure, I was unsure whether to post this on the blog. I have never posted a recipe using fake meat before. I generally want to be sharing fresh food recipes with you. But I also want my blog to reflect the full range of the vegetarian experience, and we can’t ignore the barbecue.
Barbecues are about fun, easy food, cooked in bulk and eaten in buns and topped with messy condiments, and a little bit of childhood nostalgia thrown in. Thus, meat substitutes do have a place.
Anyway, the ultimate vegetarian hot dog is so much more than just a faux hot dog.
Remember when I said “toppings to your taste”?
Truffle mayonnaise*, sauerkraut, onions and mustard are joining the party today. All of those things, layered on top of the smokiness of the hot dog.
(*This is why it gets to be called posh.)
Together, these ingredients will give you a crazy hit of that elusive 5th taste, umami.
Obviously, this recipe is not vegetarian exclusively. Anyone could take any hot dog and recreate this. But vegetarian hot dogs are great. They taste just like the real thing. Because actually, the hot dog taste is all added flavor. You could add the same flavor to vegetarian proteins like soy or mycoprotein (what Quorn is made of) and it’s kind of all the same in the end. If you’re looking to cut down on your meat intake, this one is an easy win.
I use Quorn hot dogs. I have also tried Sainsbury’s own brand vegetarian hot dogs in the past. Both good! If you want to eliminate the guilt from this pleasure, however, you could totally try this carrot hot dog recipe!
- Per hot dog:
- 1 vegetarian hot dog
- 1 hot dog bun
- ¼ onion, sliced
- 1 heaping Tblsp of mayonnaise
- Approx ½ tsp of truffle oil
- A couple forkfuls of sauerkraut
- Yellow mustard, to taste
- Grill your vegetarian hot dog alongside the sliced onions
- Meanwhile, whisk together the mayonnaise and truffle oil. The amount of truffle oil really depends on its strength so do what feels right!
- Lightly toast the hot dog bun
- Assemble! Here is the order: Truffle mayonnaise, saurkraut, hot dog and onions, topped off with a squeeze of mustard.
- Make a big mess eating it. It's all part of the fun!
